Hard disks can be divided into one or more logical disks called partitions. This division is described in the partition table found in sector 0 of the disk. You need to use fdisk command.

We've talked a lot about running multiple operating systems on the same computerwhether it's Windows and LinuxWindows and OS Xor something else but what happens when it's time to get rid of one? Here's how to delete Windows or Linux from your system after you've dual-booted them. The process is actually quite simple, but many of you ask us this when you go through your first dual-booting process, so we've decided to lay out the instructions here for easy access.

All you really need to do is delete the partition on which your unwanted Reomve is installed. That process will vary a little based on which OS you're keeping, so here are three sets of instructions. Note: Before you start, make sure you have an up-to-date backup of the system you want to keep. If you make one tiny mistake in the steps below, you could end up deleting the wrong partition, which would lihux very very bad! If you've given Linux a shot but you're ready to stick with Windows as your main OS, you'll have to go through a few extra steps.

This assumes Windows and Linux were on the same drive, and the partitions are located next to each other. Here's what you need to do:. Head to the Start menu or Start screen and search for "Disk Management. Find your Linux partition. It won't be labeled since Windows doesn't understand the Linux file system, so you'll need to figure out which one it is by size and where it is on your hard drive.

Make sure you have the right one before continuing! Right-click on the partition and choose "Delete Volume. If you get a green box of "free space," you'll have to right-click on it and choose "Delete Volume" a second time until you get the black "Unallocated Space.

Right-click on your Windows partition and choose "Extend Volume. Lastly, insert your Windows recovery disc or recovery USB drive and boot from it. Type the following command:. This will remove Linux's bootloader and replace it with Windows'.

Reboot your computer and you should find that it boots directly into Windows, with no Linux partition to be found. If you set up your dual-booting differently, your instructions may vary slightlylike if you put Linux on a separate hard drive, or if you have other operating systems on the drive. But for most people, these instructions should suffice.

If you've using a Mac, removing another partition is very easy. Again, this assumes that your partitions are on the same how to multiply using your fingers. Update : Reader MartyF81 notes that actually, the best way to uninstall Windows is to use Boot Camp's built-in uninstaller.

You can do this by launching the Boot Camp assistant and following the prompts. If you need to remove a Linux partition, however or you're on a Hackintoshhere's what you'll want to do:. You Mac may take a minute to perform the necessary processes, but when it's done, your system will be back to its original Macintosh self. If you had rEFIt installed on your system, you can leave it thereit linus going to hurt anythingbut you can also remove it just by deleting a few files.

If you're the adventurous parrtition and have decided to go to Linux full time, then your job is pretty easy. Instructions may vary by distro and your specific setup, but removf the traditional Ubuntu setup, it should look something like this:.

When it finishes, you should have a hard drive with nothing but Linux on it. Your boot menu will still have go Windows ot, and it'll work fine if you leave them there, but if you want to clean things up, just open up a Terminal in Linux and run:.

Like we said, every dual-boot setup is a beautiful and unique snowflake, so you may have to adjust what is the most sexiest thing about you of these instructions as you go to work with rempve specific settings.

Hopefully, this should give you a good guide, though. Always remember to back up first, and good luck! Kinda curious How useful is dual booting nowadays?

VM technology has grown by leaps and bounds these last few years and are almost the same as running on bare metal with stuff like VT-d. I've basically virtualized everything and don't dual boot since VMs are easier to manage what is the meaning of family oriented set up. Really the only area lacking right now is gfx processing in VMs.

If you need that power on both OSes then yes dual booting is needed. Otherwise it seems like VMs would be the better choice. The A. Whitson Gordon. Share This Story. Get our newsletter Subscribe.

I need to free the 2Tb hard disk; I tried with GParted, but I don't get how to use it, plus it seems like this partition is locked. How do I get rid of this useless partition?

Do I just need to delete the linux-swap in order to be able to use the hard disk? You can try to use fdisk from the command line. Then once fdisk is opened you can type "d" to delete and then select the partition s you want to delete. After you removed the partition s don't forget to write the changes. If you right-click on the partition's entry in GParted, there should be an option "Unmount" in the context menu.

Click it. Every hard drive needs one or more partitions to be useful. Partitions are created when you create a filesystem on it. Most used partitions scheme is MBR. In MBR, you can have only 4 partitions in a disk. These are called Primary partition. If you need more than 4 partitions, You can make one of the 4 as Extended partition.

This extended partition works as a container and it turn can hold more than 1 partitions. These partitions are called Logical partitions. In your GParted image, the first partition bigger one is a primary partition. And the Swap partition is a logical partition inside an Extended partition.

If you're trying to free the space of linux-swap thinking It's useless, Then I'd say not to delete that partition. Because Linux Swap is helpful for hibernating and 31 GB won't hurt much considering your disk size. If you really want to remove this swap, click on the swap partition, right click, select Swapoff. Then again select it, right click and use Delete to remove the partition. You can then see that there is still a partition extended partition with empty space.

Select that space, right click and select Delete again. This will clear the Extended partition. First of all, a hard drive is useless unless its been partitioned, so I would recommend just keeping that partition unless you're never going to use that 2TB drive.

If it has nothing important to you and you really want it gone, however, then you can just reformat it with no partitions. I've never used GParted, but you can do this with the command line.

Sorry if I underestimate your knowledge of a command line, but these instructions are about as cookie cutter as I can get:. Hit Enter after every line to run them. Enter your super-user password when asked for it. This will unmount the partition and completely erase the part of the drive that knows its been partitioned. Hope this helps! EDIT: Two other popular command line utilities for formatting disk drives are parted GParted without the pretty interface and fdisk , so sebastienvg's answer would also work.
